Biotin is a water-soluble B-vitamin, also called vitamin B7 and formerly known as vitamin H or coenzyme R. It is a white or almost white, crystalline powder or colorless crystals, very slightly soluble in water and in alcohol, practically insoluble in acetone. It dissolves in dilute solutions of alkali hydroxides. Its source can be from chemical synthesis or microbial fermentation.

Biotin is an important component of enzymes in the body that break down certain substances like fats, carbohydrates, and others. It is used for preventing and treating biotin deficiency associated with pregnancy, long-term tube feeding, malnutrition, and rapid weight loss. It is also used orally for hair loss, brittle nails, skin rash in infants (seborrheic dermatitis), diabetes, and mild depression.
